Project 7: Long-range Rydberg interactions mediated by a microwave cavity at finite temperature

Summary

The goal of our project is the experimental realization of long-range coherent interactions between Rydberg atoms mediated by a superconducting coplanar microwave resonator at a finite temperature. We seek to demonstrate that these interactions and the conditional excitation of pairs of spatially separated Rydberg atoms can be made insensitive to the photon number fluctuations of the cavity. With this we aim to explore novel schemes of quantum gates based on cavity-mediated coherent interactions between distant pairs of Rydberg atoms or atomic ensembles in the Rydberg blockade regime that do not require a zero temperature microwave cavity but are feasible at the temperature of liquid helium (4K) on standard atom chips.
